Training Australian Cattle Dogs
Training the Australian Cattle Dog is fairly easy as they are very intelligent, and extremely quick learners. A training session should be short and sweet. Anywhwere from 10 minutes but no more then 15 minutes, as they're patience may soon wear thin. As with any dog treats are a must. All ways remember to use positive reenforcement. Do not punish the dog if they are not learning the trick, or performing it fast enough for you. This will only discourage them, and put them off.
When training make sure you have their attention and eye contact. Proceed witht teaching the dog the new trick. When they get it right reward them with the treat. Do not reward them if they do not get it right. It is also important to note that once they have learned the trick that you do not always give them a treat for performing the trick. Mix it up a little bit. Roughly about half the time give them a treat for doing a trick. A couple of short training sessions a day is all that is needed. Continue on with random and spontaneous training through out the following days, and weeks.
You'll find that after you teach them only a few tricks they will learn the new tricks even quicker.
