The Not So Nippy Blue Heeler
Despite the reputation, and the pure fact that Blue Heelers were born, and bred to nip. Some Australian Cattle Dogs live up to quite the contrary. Our Blue Heeler who I have spoken to several time for him to release his name to the general public, still refuses outright. So, gotta respect his decesion. Our Blue Heeler has never, ever nipped at me, or anybody else. He gets a long very well with strangers too. Although in his now later years, he has become quite the grump at times, and doesn't like other dogs. He used to get a long with them fine, but chooses not to anymore. Which of course is natural for most Blue Heelers. If you are thinking about getting a Blue Heeler, and your probably are, you should take into consideration that they do have a bit of a temper towards other dogs. However, in saying that they get along very well with other cattle dogs such as Border Collies, and of course other Heelers.
Even though they don't want to admit it. Blue Heeler too, love some puppy hugs. It did take a good few years though to get to this stage with ours. Probably around a solid 3 years before he was happy to receive a hug. He didn't like them at first, but as he got older he realized that it is a way that we humans show affection. Much like when a puppy gives you puppy kisses. Part of this might have been that we picked him up at the pound. He was a (and still is) extremely wild, and care free animal. But as you can see in the above picture, he likes to party with us, and crash out hard afterwords. He is a very smart, and loving dog.
You might have heard that Blue Heelers are very stubborn, and stubborn they are. Be prepared to work with a (at times) defiant, and unwilling to partcipate animal. This I found is quickly remedied with quick, solid, and repetitive training sessions when you first purchase/adopt your Australian Cattle Dog.
So, beneath the rugid, solid, sturdy, muscular exterior of a bred working machine; you'll find that Blue Heelers are some of softiest, of softy type dogs around. Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that of a lap dog. Come on now. Can you imagine me walking down the street carrying my dog? Yeah, my dog takes me for walks! Get outta here!
Brace yourself and get ready for a handful when you decide to challenge yourself with the comradery of a wonderful Blue Heeler.
